Kelpies

Below are some 'Kelpies' of the project to-date:

David Bond
David Bond is the project's first 'kelpie'. David has been involved with the kelp harvesting industry for 9 years. David has experience in both the survey and assessment of Giant Kelp beds in Tasmania and New Zealand. As a former employee of Alginates Australia, David was responsible for undertaking aerial and boat-based surveys of kelp beds from Eddystone Point to Recherche Bay.

Mick Olsen

Mick Olsen has a long history of marine fisheries and ecological research in Australia. During the early 1960s, Mick was the Harvesting Manager for Alginates Australia (1964-67) and in a joint research program with CSIRO, undertook detailed studies on the potential effects of the Giant Kelp harvesting on rock lobster stocks.

Here are some pictures of him in 1947 and 1958, taken from the Bright Sparks Gallery (click on the thumbnail to view the larger picture):

Will James

Will James is a commercial fisherman and diver with a long interest in the decline of Giant Kelp off Tasmania. Since the early 1980s, Will has been a maintenance diver and commercial sea urchin farmer, with a keen interest in fish processing and marketing. Will is a foundation member of 'SeaCare', a group dedicated to marine conservation, particularly the recovery of Giant Kelp forests.
