CLUB HISTORY

The Hobart RC Flyers inc. (originally called Hobart Phantom Flyers) founded in 1992 / 93, is the result of a small group of highly experienced and dedicated R/C aeromodellers, led by founder, Shevill Mathers, who was also a founder member of the Phoenix Flyers of Launceston, and with forty years of modelling expertise, including the honour of being the first CFI for Tasmania, at the inception of the MAAA Wing Proficiency Training Scheme, in 1991.

The aims of club is to gather together like minded individuals, also with interest and experience in various forms of aeromodelling, to actively pursue their interests in radio controlled aeromodelling in its many forms, be it fixed wing or rotary wing, in a safe and friendly environment.

The Club commenced operations at Sandford in 1993, on property owned by Senator Paul Calvert, to whom the club owes its gratitude. The clubhouse must be one of the oldest in Australia, built in the early 1800's it is of significant historical importance of the Sandford area. The cottage clubhouse has mains electricity and a big open fireplace. The property was used in the early days (1800s) to re-victual the sailing ships that anchored in Frederick Henry Bay. It is also from this location that Tasmania was first surveyed, and the trig point on the 300m hill (Mt. Mather) that overlooks the flying field was named after the surveyor.

Members worked hard to establish the facility, the club house was repainted inside and out, with a rain water tank installed. Thousands of mature thistles had to be cleared to make the runway areas, and a road works grader levelled off both runways. Lots of patience and hard work has paid off, and members enjoy a very pleasant flying environment.
